Mull 4

Mull

If you find yourself getting in a right state trying to decide between coming to Greenstone Lodge or going to a Scottish Island for your holiday I’d say a few things.

  • Thank you so much, it’s very nice of you to compare us to a whole island. We’re blushing.
  • Try worrying about bigger things, just watch the news for a bit, that’ll do it.
  • Just visit us, and an island you silly goose.

But if you’ve only got a few days off work, then why not stay with us and plan a day trip to the beautiful Island of Mull, its just a hop, skip and a jump away. More specifically it’s a 42 mile drive to Oban (hop), then a 46 minute ferry journey to Craignure (skip), then just a drive to wherever you’d like to go on the island (jump).

Not to be confused with the place mentioned in the absolute banger of a song by Wings, “Mull of Kintyre”, the Isle of Mull is the 2nd largest Island in the Inner Hebrides after Skye, and the 4th biggest in Scotland. It boasts two distilleries, 261 species of birds, including both golden and white tailed eagles, loads more wildlife in the surrounding waters such as basking sharks, minke whales, dolphins, and the main town on the island, Tobermory was the colourful setting for Cbeebies TV show Balamory.  There’s also Ben More to climb up and Eas Fors Waterfall to visit, and is shrouded in myth and ancient traditions having been inhabited for the last 10,000 years.

Sounds great right? We took a day trip there last month to make sure its wasn’t all talk, we had a great day as you will clearly be able to tell from the attached photos.

There are a good amount of CalMac ferries going back and forth throughout the day, if you’re taking a car it’s essential to book in advance as there’s limited space. You could alternatively get the train to Oban, go on as a foot passenger and get the bus around the island.

I’d say this blog was a bit more informative than normal, with slightly less nonsense. Will try to amend that for next time.
